Rock 'n' Roll Around My Head
Posted by nerdling | June 29, 2004 11:35 PM
A blogger I greatly admire posted a list of his top albums (thus far) of 2004. I was disappointed with his selections, so I thought I would make a list of my own to honor all the great releases that have come out this year.
My picks for the top five albums of 2004, January-June, in alphabetical order:
01. Battles—EP C
"Hi/Lo," "Hi/Lo," the only song you need to know.
02. Jay Farrar—Stone, Steel & Bright Lights
And all this time I thought he'd drowned his talent in beer.
03. Loretta Lynn—Van Lear Rose
If you don't own this, you should be ashamed.
04. Morrissey—You Are the Quarry
I gave up on him after Kill Uncle but this album reaffirms my faith.
05. Maritime—Glass Floor
It's a great album if you like your music really poppy.
I totally forgot about the Farrar album, that might end up in my year-end list. I have a copy of the Maritime record, but haven't spun it yet, I'll move it to the top of the stack.

I wouldn't recommend the Maritime record to everyone, but if you liked TPR you'll probably like Glass Floor. The songs fall somewhere between the styles of Nothing Feels Good and Very Emergency, mixed with a little bit of Vermont's sound and some horns.
And Jay Farrar's new album is great. The first three or four songs alone are worth the cost of the entire CD.

my top 3, in the order i think of them:
1. loretta lynn--van lear rose
2. patterson hood--killers and stars
3. finntroll--nattfodd
4. meads of asphodel--exhuming the grave of yeshua
5. drive-by truckers--the dirty south (yeah, i know it hasn't been released yet, but i can GUARANTEE its greatness).
most of the truly great stuff i have heard this year is stuff that isn't 2004, like scissorfight's last ep, the darkness, centro-matic, et cetera. but w/ new releases from scissorfight, the old 97's, and the aforementioned truckers, there's a lot to look forward to.
